MINIATURES FOR
APOCALYPSO!
There is, of course,no
official range of miniatures for APOCALYPSO! There is a set of counters
which you can use to get you by, but the best way to play is with painted
miniatures.
APOCALYPSO! is desgined to be used with 25mm or 28mm miniatures. However,
Games Workshop miniatures will not work. This is because they
all have gigantic 20mm or 25mm bases, which will take up entire squares
on APOCALYPSO! tiles.
I use a collection of miniatures from various sources, here's what I
use, and how I prepare them:
THE PLAYER CHARACTERS:
Every one of the player characters comes from Eureka. Almost all of
them i actually owned before I started work on APOCALYPSO, which explains
my choice of player character some what. Eureka has a fantastic range
of crazy SF and Fantasy miniatures, so you really should check them
out. If you live in Melbourne, you really HAVE to go there in person.
It's awesome. Otherwise, just use thier online store. A word of warning
- not eveythtin on the Online Store has picture, so if you use that
option, you can't always tell what you will get.
MUTANTS:
For Mutants I use 18mm war trolls from Eureka Miniatures. These miniatures
are about the size of a hunched over 25mm figure. They're ugly, stunted,
muscular and covered in improvised looking armor.
For Gun mutants, I use the same figures, but with the addition of guns
(suprise!) You can buy loose guns from Eureka, but I was out of money
so mine are scratch built. Two of the Gun Mutants have cut down Necromunda
las guns. The other four have guns built from various pieces of plasticard
and paddlepop stick with wire barrels.
WASTERS and RAIDERS:
Wasters and Raiders are pretty much the same thing, it's just a question
of weapons. Sionce both Wasters and Raiders are fairly generic names
given to any inhabitant of the Wastelands, you cna use basically anything.
I use a mixture of miniatures from Ground Zero Games (GZG designs the
games, Eureka makes the minis) - Combat Babes, Rednecks, and a few Islamic
Federation soldiers from Star Grunt.
ZOMBIES:
Zombies are readily available in every scale imaginable. No problem
there. Except that I was out of money again. Fortunatly, i had a box
of 1:72nd scale British Boer War infantry lying around. 1:72nd for those
who don;t know, is the same as 25mm scale. You can buy aa huge range
of 1:72 scale figures from any hobby shop. They cover every time period
imaginable, but you won;t find any fantasy or SF stuff, it's all historical.
So my Zombies are all wearing pith helmets. I've chopped and changed
thier poses a bit, and I'm very pleased that the box included six crawling
soliders - they make wicked amputee zombies.
OBJECTIVES:
Some of the objectives call for special minis as the bosses. My Mad
Scientist is from Eureka, there are several to choose from in various
ranges. For the Beast Below I have scratchbuilt six tentacles. Starting
with a 20mm square base from GW, I drilled a small hole, and poked some
garneding wire through. The wire was glues in place, and bent to a good
tentacle shape. This was then covered in Green stuff, and a tip sculpted
on. It's very easy to sculpt tentacles really!
THE OOK:
THe ook are simplicity itself: They are all completely stock members
of Eureka's Boiler Suit Ape range. GOd bless those boiler suit apes!
THE RAD CHICKEN:
THe Rad Chicken is just a toy chicken I picked up from a toy shop, painted
an apporopriatly pestilential and radioactive color.
