IRONGOUNDERSON'S BREWERS MODELING DIARY
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2: Paint scheme tryouts

I'd originally been thinking of either a Blue and Purple scheme, or a Green and Bone scheme. Then Istarted to think that a brewery army would wear brewery colours. So I started thinking about the colours of beer cans, and I decided on a dark red and gold scheme. This would tie in with the brewery theme nicely, be bright enough to stand out on the table, and prove I can paint colors other than green! (My previous armies have been Orks, Orcs, Nurgle and Nurgle based Lost and the Damned - very green armies!)

Fortunately for me, last month's White Dwarf came with a free Gobbo and a Free Dwarf, so I had something to test my scheme out on. I painted him up rather quickly to try out the colours. I'm not intending to use him in the actual army, he won't match!
For the army, I will be using Scab red dry-brushed with Red Gore. But I don't have any scab red, so the red is Red gore, dry-brushed with Blood red. The armor has been painted with Boltgun metal, and then given a black ink wash. I decided on Snakebite leather for the beard, and gave it a brown ink wash. This was drybrushed with bubonic brown (very lightly). The yellow areas are Bubonic brown, drybrushed with Bad Moon Yellow. It doesn't look vary good because my Bad Moon Yellow is one of the first paints I ever bought. It's about ten years old, and very gloopy. I'd also prefer a darker yellow, so I will be buying some Golden Yellow for use on the real army. My gold's also pretty old and dried up, so I had to thin it down to get it to flow. It'll be a lot stronger when I'm paiting for real.
The skin tone is painted in a slightly experimental manner which I developed while I was painting a Dwarf for DND. The skin is first painted with Vermin Brown. This is then drybrushed with Bronzed flesh, and given a Flesh Wash. This made things a bit to dark, so I gave it another bronzed flesh drybrush. The dwarf is, of course, drunk so I had to give him a red nose. I watered down some blood red, and used it like a wash over his nose until I was happy with the result.
I figure that Dwarfs are a naturally ruddy race. And those are the ones who live under moutains! So a Dwarf who lives out in the sun is probably going to be fairly dark skinned.
