THE
GRAND TEMPLE OF HAXOR
I
figured that if I was building a Khemrian themed table for HGC, it
should at least have a temple. Otherwise where else would the Liche
priests hang out between battles? This temple's only sort of based
on Egyptian temples. It has the usual angled walls, but some of it's
styling cues come from either the other Khemri stuff I've made, or
stuff
which just looked good to me.
Incidentally, It's named after the Grand Temple at Luxor.(A Haxor,
usually spelt HA><0R, is a Hacker in the starnge alpha numeric
language which hackers use, called HA><0R Speak)

First
off, I made the stone plinth the temple sits on. I had some 0.5cm
polystyrene sheet from somewhere, so it was a simple case of cutting
three sheets, each slightly narrower to form steps. The top step is
17 by 25, the bottom step is 19 by 25. If you don;t have such thin
sheets (they are rare), simply use one sheet of 1.5cm, and carve the
steps. Now
that the base is done, it's time for the temple building. Mark out
two rectangles of corrugated card 23 by 7cm. Mark in 1cm from each
top edge. Draw a line from the bottom corner to this mark, and cut
out the resultant shape. Now, mark up two rectangles 12 by 7, and
repeat the edge marking procedure. These four pieces form the walls
of the temple. |
NOTE:
The vertical measurements of all pieces involved will depend on the exact
height of your pillars. Measure things against them before doing anything.
Now, setting aside the front wall, mark a point half way along the top
of each wall. Measure 1cm to either side. Draw a line 2cm down from each
mark, and connect them to mark out the windows. Cut the windows out, and
glue thin card blanking plates across them. Now glue the temple together
using supaglue.
wall.
Now glue the temple to the plinth (It's as good a time as any.)
Cut
out a rectangle of corrugated 6cm by 7cm. Also, cut out two pieces
7cm high, 2cm at the top an 1cm at the base. (These three pieces form
the entrance) Take the large piece, and mark out a door 5cm by 4cm,
with an arched top 1.5cm tall. Cut this out carefully so as not to
rip the piece. Glue the door pieces together, and glue the door to
the temple's front
TIP: You can make the temple look more weathered
by adding exposed brick work. Simply cut out a piece of thin card
the same size and shape as a wall, and remove a chunk from it. Cut
the chunk into small rectangles, and glue the blank plate and the
resultant bricks to the wall. When you plaster the walls, spread the
plaster over the edges of the bricks so that it looks like the adobe
cladding has fallen off. |
 |
Mark
out a rectangle of thick card 23cm by 15cm. This is the roof. Mark out
two rectangles 23cm by 3cm. Rule a second line, 2cm up. Mark points 1cm
in from each edge at the top. Now, mark in points 2cm in from each edge
on the lower line. Connect These points. Cut out one of These pieces.
| Mark
the center point of the other, and mark out a semi circle about 8cm
across (I used the inside of a roll of gaffer tape for this) centered
on the bottom of the piece. Cut
this lot out, and you've got the front and back walls of the roof.
Now, make two pieces like the first, but 15cm long. Glue the walls
to the roof, before gluing the roof to the temple building. It should
over hang at the sides and back by about 0.5cm, and 3.5 to the front,
where the pillars will be.
Mark out another semicircle of corrugated card, and cut it out. Glue
this on the front of the other so it stands out from the wall. Cut
out an identically shaped piece of thin card. Now, blutak your Khemri
banner to this semicircle, and use it to mark out the 'wedges'. The
semicircle needs to be divided into 5 pieces. |
 |
The radiant spikes on the banner pole are correctly spaced, so mark out
from each, and measure to the edge. Cut down These lines almost to the
point they meet. Widen the cuts, and remove the banner. Glue the thin
card to the front of the semicircle
Now,
the temple is ready for plastering. If you want, you can also add
a base from Thick card, but it isn't entirely necessary.
Once the plaster is dry, sand it to a reasonable smoothness, and get
rid of un natural protrusions.
Now, glue the banner to the center of the semicircle, and a skull
shaped vampire counts shield boss to top o each 'wedge'. Also, glue
a shied boss to the center of the door's lintel.Spread
PVA over the base, and sprinkle with sand.
TIP: For a more weathered appearance, try
adding some sand to the plinth the temple is sitting on. |
 |
Now
the temple's ready to paint. Treat the sand in the same way as for the
other desert pieces. Paint the temple beige, and dry brush with white.
Dry brush the wedges of the semicircle with yellow and blue alternatively.
Paint black inside the door and windows. Paint the banner and skulls in
an appropriate metallic, such as Gold, or Bronze. Paint the pillars up
in the same way as the walls, before gluing them on. (It's easier this
way.)
