DA SQUIGGOTH
BIG BAD FERAL FUNGUS
|
Many many moons ago,
when the great Chiefs sat around the campfire of an evening, their
conversation turned to the noble Squiggoth. It soon became evident
to them that such a mighty beast was a must for any Orky horde.
Okay... actually, I was thinking about Savage Orcs in WFB, and
how they would probably use Squiggoths as a chariot substitute.
So then I had to go and make one, didn't I? Of course, there are
no rules for a Squiggoth in WFB, but I juts count it as a Giant.
Of course, having a squiggoth inevitably lead to collecting feral
Orks in 40K. Fate? Destiny? Harsh Economics? Call it what you
will.

The squiggoth
itself is made from a cheap plastic toy Dimetrodon (that's one
of those Dinosaurs with the frill down the back which looks like
the Sydney Harbor bridge). I cut off the frill and tail, added
horns, a replacement bum, fur, armor, chains and Howdah supports.
Right from the start I knew I was going to use the beasty for
both 40K and Fantasy. This meant I could not glue the Howdah on.
Instead, I stuck Howdah supports to the squiggoth's back, and
the different Howdahs are wedges onto these.

| The
40K Howdah is made mostly from Plasticard around a Lobba. I bought
the lobba as both the main weapon and the basis of the Howdah. The
whole Lobba chassis is in there, minus the wheels, and plasticard
has been built up around it to form an armored box. Various other
Okry wot-nots where also added, such as spikes (gobbo spear tips),
shield icons, buggy parts, jerry cans, spent ammo and bedrolls.

The krew of
the Squiggoth consists of the two Grots who came with the lobba,
a Mek, and a number of Snots. The snots are the only krew who
never change, being glued to the squiggoth itself, not the Howdah.
I converted the Mek using the legs from a Buggy driver so he could
sit on the control chair from an old metal land speeder, the snots
and grots are untouched.

I
actually painted up the 40K squiggoth ages before I started the
rest of the Feral Orks. I'd been using red warpaint in my Fantasy
army, so I wanted to try out Blue. That, and I think I'd run out
of red gore...
The rest of my Hybrid ork horde has had to be painted to match this
model, with minor differences. Not all Orks look the same after
all. |
