TAU COMMS ARRAY
Building Tau terrain has always presented a bit of a problem to me. Tau structures are curved, and smooth. Previously, I have experimented with using various toy buckets, but the plastic they are made from is very slick, so paint and glue don't stick very well. However, I've found a very nifty solution which builds into a nice little tower piece. A larger version would certainly be possible, and I am working on it.

You will need:

  • A Bonta'divinia Tiramisu pot (Bonta'divinia Tiramisu is available in most super markets)
  • A single serve tuna can.
  • Foam core.
  • Cardboard or Plasticard.
  • A toothpick.
  • A milk bottle cap.
  • Textured paint.
  • A hot glue gun or PVA glue.
  • Super glue.
  • A compass (The drawing kind)

Method:

First, use your compass to mark out a circular base 12cm across. Cut this out with a sharp knife and bevel the edges.
Now glue the tiramisu pot down to the base upside-down using hot glue or PVA (Hot glue will give a better bond and it sets faster, so if you have a Hot glue gun, use it!)
Glue the tuna can upside-down to the base of the Tiramisu pot.
Again using hot glue, attach the milk bottle top to the top of the tuna can.

This gives you the basic shape of the tower, which can now be decorated. First, cut 8 strips of foam core, 5mm across by 3.5cm high. Cut one end of each strip to a quarter circle.

TIP: An easy way to do this is to make two straight cuts to get the rough shape, then use sand paper to round the shape off.

Glue the eight strips upright around the base of the tiramisu pot.
Cut four strips of cardboard or plasticard 3.5cm long by 5mm wide, and glue these upright around the tuna can. I've added pieces of Plastruct T-section to three of these uprights, the antenna array is attached to the forth.
Now cut several strips of thin card or plasticard. Measure the distance between the uprights on the tuna can, and cut these strips down to fit. Glue two strips between each set of uprights to form the upper and lower frames of a window.

TIP: The tuna cans have a horizontal band of color around the bottom which can be used to help make sure you glue the strips on straight.

Using thin cardboard or plasticard, make a door and glue it between two of the uprights on the tiramisu pot.
Now you can build the antenna array from thick card or plasticard You will need to measure your tower up individually, but the following worked for me:
The tuna can is 4cm high, so start out with a 4cm vertical. The distance between the edge of the can and the bottle top is 1.5cm, the bottle top is 1cm high. You can make the antenna any shape or size you want, as long as the notch in the base conforms to these measurements.
Use card or plasticard strips to add detail to the antenna array. I've also glued a toothpick to the leading edge of the antenna.
Now paint the whole tower with Textured paint. Leave the spaces between the window frames clear (who ever heard of textured windows?). I've also left the antenna free of texture.
Glue sand around the base of the tower, and you are ready to paint!

Undercoat the whole tower with a pale spray can (I used yellow automotive primer, but white, bone or gray will also work). It's really up to you how you paint the tower, but Tau seem to work well in pale colors such as Bone and light brown. I drybrushed the automotive primer undercoat with bleached bone, and then a very slightly off-white colour. Make sure you paint the windows black.
